Jim Maire
I was given a camera for my sixth birthday and became the family photographer. My interest in photography grew over the years and by the time I graduated from high school I was hooked. I joined the Navy in 1968 and with my first paycheck flew to Chicago and bought my first professional camera, a Nikon FTn and I never looked back. After my stint in the Navy I attended Indiana University (Bloomington Indiana is my home town, Go IU), majored in fine arts photography then switched to and graduated with a bachelors degree in art education with a minor in photojournalism.
Since moving to Utah in 1977 I have worked as a medical photographer at the University of Utah Medical Center, art director for Dream Garden Press and owner of Maire Graphics, a graphic design and photography business. Most recently I was co-owner of Main Street Photographer in Park City, Utah. But through it all, shooting landscape and travel photography was and continues to be my passion. While attending college my photographic heroes were Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Paul Strand, Imogene Cunningham and Jerry Uelsmann. I was also greatly influenced by two of my photography professors, Henry Holmes Smith (fine art), and Wilmer Counts (photojournalism). Currently I find inspiration in Dewitt Jones, Art Wolf, Frans Lanting, Julieanne Kost and Trey Ratcliff.
I’m in love with the landscape and history of the West. All its beauty and ancient cultures hold a particular reverence that resonates with who I am. I enjoy sharing my excitement about photography and my hope is that you will get a feel for the places I visit and share my appreciation of them through the images I create.
