Both photos by Jean Maire

James Maire
Jim was given a camera for his sixth birthday and became the family photographer. His interest in photography grew over the years and by the time he graduated from high school he was hooked. He joined the Navy in 1968 and with his first paycheck flew to Chicago and bought his first professional camera, a Nikon FTn. He never looked back. After his stint in the Navy Jim attended Indiana University, majored in fine arts photography then switched to and graduated in art education with a minor in photojournalism.
Since moving to Utah in 1977 Jim has worked as a medical photographer at the University of Utah Medical Center, art director for Dream Garden Press and owner of Maire Graphics, a graphic design and photography business. Most recently he was co-owner of Main Street Photographer in Park City, Utah. But through it all, shooting freelance, landscape and travel photography was and continues to be his passion. While attending college his photographic heroes were Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Paul Strand, Imogene Cunningham and Jerry Uelsmann. He was also greatly influenced by two of his photography professors, Henry Holmes Smith (fine art), and Wilmer Counts (photojournalism). Currently Jim finds inspiration in Dewitt Jones, Art Wolf, Frans Lanting, Julieanne Kost and Trey Ratcliff.
“I’m in love with the landscape and history of the West. All its beauty and ancient cultures hold a particular reverence that resonates with who I am. I enjoy sharing my excitement about photography and my hope is that you will get a feel for the places I visit and share my appreciation of them through the images I create.”
