San Juan Mountains in the Fall
These new images of the San Juan Mountains are from September of 2018. Camping at close to 10,000 feet makes for some chilly mornings but if you're looking for magnificant fall color its worth it! Scroll down to see photos from my 2010 trip.
2010 photo are below
The San Juan Mountains are in South Western Colorado with the old mining town of Silverton right in the middle of the mountains. These shots are from the fall of 2010 (mid September) and the color was just starting to change on the Aspen when we arrived. We spent a great deal of time just roaming the old mining roads (trails), which are everywhere, just looking to see what we could find. The old mining trails will take you to over 13,000 feet with amazing views from the top of the world, but also include sheer drop offs with blind curves and tight switchbacks while driving over boulders! I tried to stay on the easier roads but did take an unplanned route that had me white knuckling it for about seven miles. If you are into mining history and beautiful scenery this place is for you. I've included a couple of shots of Silverton and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad for a feel of the area. If you would like to see more shots of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad click here.
