Thunder Mountain Monument | Imlay Nevada
I have passed Imlay Nevada many times on interstate 80 and at 70+ miles per hour glanced over to the South side of the highway and thought to myself (and sometimes out loud to my trusty traveling companion Jean) “what the #@%& is that?" So last fall returning from a Pacific Northwest trip and thanks to my GPS proximity alarm, I took the exit and arrived at one of the weirdest places I think I have ever been (yes, weirder that Gilgal Gardens in SLC). Its name is Thunder Mountain Monument and is dedicated to the Native American Indian and was created by Frank Van Zant. It is a state of Nevada historic site and its official website is: http://www.thundermountainmonument.com (be patient, it loads very slowly).
The next time I pass this way I will plan way more time as the hour I spent there merely scratched the surface of photo possibilities. If you should stop there please be kind to the place, time and people have taken their toll. There is a donation box to help with restoration so please donate, as weird as it is (and for that very reason) this place needs to be preserved. |
